Frequently Asked Questions
Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme managed by EPFO. Employees in establishments with 20+ workers earning up to ₹15,000/month are mandatorily covered. Others can opt in voluntarily. Both employee and employer contribute 12% of basic+DA monthly.
Of the employer's 12%: 8.33% goes to EPS (Employee Pension Scheme, capped at ₹1,250/month on ₹15,000 ceiling) and 3.67% goes directly to the EPF account. If basic+DA exceeds ₹15,000, the EPS contribution is still capped at ₹1,250/month.
The EPF interest rate for FY2023-24 is 8.25% p.a., declared by the EPFO Central Board of Trustees and approved by the Ministry of Finance. This rate is reviewed annually. Historical rates have ranged from 8.1% to 8.65% in recent years.
EPF is EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) if you withdraw after 5 years of continuous service — contributions get 80C benefit, interest is tax-free, maturity is tax-free. Withdrawal before 5 years is taxable. TDS at 10% applies on withdrawals above ₹50,000 before 5 years.
Yes. You can make partial withdrawals for specific purposes (home loan, medical, marriage, education) after a certain number of years. Full withdrawal is allowed after 2 months of unemployment. The EPFO portal (epfindia.gov.in) allows online claim submission.
EPF is the provident fund where both employee and employer contributions accumulate with interest. EPS (Employee Pension Scheme) receives 8.33% from the employer and provides a monthly pension after retirement (age 58, minimum 10 years of service). The pension amount is limited based on pensionable salary.
