Frequently Asked Questions — Construction & Real Estate

How accurate are construction material estimates?
These calculators give approximate quantities for planning. Actual requirements depend on: contractor waste (5–15%), on-site conditions, design complexity, and local material standards. Always add 5–10% buffer. For structural work, always get quantities verified by a licensed civil engineer.
What is M15, M20, M25 concrete?
M = Mix strength in MPa (N/mm²) at 28 days. M15 (1:2:4 nominal mix): lightweight work, pathways, compound walls. M20 (1:1.5:3): most common for slabs, beams, columns. M25 (1:1:2): high-strength applications, heavily loaded beams. Higher grade concrete requires design mix ratios by a structural engineer.
How many bricks per square foot of wall?
For 9" (230mm) full brick wall: ~9–10 bricks per sq ft of wall face. For 4.5" (115mm) half brick: ~4.5–5 per sq ft. Standard Indian modular brick: 190×90×90mm with 10mm mortar joint = 200×100×100mm nominal. Always add 7–10% for breakage and cutting waste.
How much paint per room?
Standard interior emulsion: 120 sq ft per litre per coat. Average 12×10 ft room, 9 ft ceiling: wall area ≈ 360 sq ft (minus doors/windows). With 2 coats + 10% wastage ≈ 7 litres. Premium paints and rough surfaces may need 20–25% more. Always buy extra from the same production batch.
What does the dry volume factor of 1.54 mean in concrete?
When you mix dry cement, sand, and aggregate with water, the paste fills the voids and reduces volume by ~35%. So dry materials occupy 1/(1–0.35) ≈ 1.54× more volume than the wet concrete they produce. Always multiply wet concrete volume by 1.54 to find dry material quantities needed.
