Frequently Asked Questions

ROI (Return on Investment) is the total percentage gain or loss over an investment period: (Final − Initial) / Initial × 100. CAGR is the annualised version of ROI, showing the equivalent yearly growth rate. ROI is simpler but doesn't account for time; CAGR is better for comparing investments held for different durations.
A "good" ROI depends on the asset class and time period. Equity mutual funds: 10-15% annualised ROI is considered good. Real estate: 8-12% is typical. FD: 6.5-7.5%. Inflation is ~6%, so any investment with real returns above inflation is considered wealth-creating.
For rental property ROI: include rental income in "Final Value" and add purchase price + renovation costs + maintenance costs in "Initial Investment". Annual rental yield = (Annual Rent ÷ Property Value) × 100. Total ROI includes both appreciation and rental income.
Simple ROI treats the gain as a percentage of investment without considering time (e.g., 50% over 3 years). Annualised ROI converts it to a per-year rate using compounding (CAGR): (1.50)^(1/3) − 1 = 14.47% per year. Annualised ROI allows fair comparison of investments held for different periods.
