Frequently Asked Questions
A hash function takes any input and produces a fixed-length output (digest). Key properties: deterministic (same input → same hash), fast to compute, one-way (cannot reverse hash to get input), avalanche effect (tiny input change → completely different hash). Common uses: password storage, file integrity verification, digital signatures, checksums.
MD5 is NOT secure for cryptographic purposes. Collisions (two different inputs producing the same hash) can be intentionally crafted. MD5 was broken for certificate forgery in 2008. Do NOT use MD5 for: password hashing (use bcrypt/argon2), digital signatures, or security-critical checksums. MD5 is still fine for non-security uses like checksumming downloads or deduplication.
Never use MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, or SHA-512 directly for passwords — they are too fast (attackers can compute billions/second). Use purpose-built password hashing functions: bcrypt (most widely used), scrypt (memory-hard), Argon2 (winner of Password Hashing Competition, recommended). These are intentionally slow and salted. In Node.js: bcryptjs or argon2 packages.
SHA-256 is used in: Bitcoin (proof-of-work and transaction IDs), TLS/HTTPS certificates, file integrity verification (software downloads show SHA-256 checksums), HMAC authentication tokens, and JWT signatures (RS256/HS256). SHA-256 produces a 256-bit (64 hex chars) digest. It remains cryptographically secure as of 2024.
