The US Navy formula is accurate to within ±3–4% compared to DEXA scan (the gold standard). It's one of the most practical field methods — requires only a tape measure. It tends to slightly overestimate body fat in very lean individuals and underestimate in very obese individuals.
Essential fat is the minimum fat needed for physiological functions — hormone production, insulation, organ protection. For men it's 2–5%, for women 10–13%. Women need more essential fat due to reproductive functions. Going below essential fat levels is dangerous and leads to organ damage.
For men: Athletic 6–13%, Fitness 14–17%, Average 18–24%, Obese 25%+. For women: Athletic 14–20%, Fitness 21–24%, Average 25–31%, Obese 32%+. These ranges vary by age — body fat naturally increases with age even at the same weight.
Neck: measure at the narrowest point, just below the larynx (Adam's apple), keep the tape horizontal. Waist: measure at the level of the navel, at the end of a normal exhale, keep tape horizontal. Hip (women only): measure at the widest point of the buttocks. Take 3 measurements and use the average.
