Frequently Asked Questions

No single formula is universally accurate. The Devine formula (1974) is widely used in medical settings (e.g., drug dosing). Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) are refinements. Hamwi (1964) is the oldest. The range across all four formulas gives a practical target zone. Body composition (muscle vs fat) matters more than a single number.
These formulas were derived from population averages and don't account for frame size, muscle mass, age, or ethnicity. A muscular athlete may be "overweight" by these formulas while being very healthy. A better measure is body fat percentage combined with waist circumference. BMI is another rough indicator (18.5–24.9 is "normal").
Not exactly. "Ideal weight" from formulas is a statistical target. "Healthy weight" is better defined by metabolic health markers — blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and waist-to-height ratio. Many people are healthy at weights above or below the formula targets.
Most formulas assume medium frame. Large-framed people may add 10% to the result; small-framed people may subtract 10%. Women's formulas start lower because women naturally have more fat and less muscle than men at the same height. Bone density also plays a role.
