Frequently Asked Questions

Average adult reading speed: 200–250 words per minute (wpm) for non-fiction. Faster for familiar topics (up to 400 wpm). Slower for technical content (100–150 wpm). Speed reading techniques can achieve 500+ wpm but with reduced comprehension. This tool uses 200 wpm as the baseline, which is a commonly cited average for timed reading estimates.
Sentences are counted by matching text ending with . ! or ? followed by a space or end of string. This heuristic handles most cases but may miscount abbreviations (Mr. Dr. etc.), decimal numbers (3.14), or ellipsis (...). For precise academic work, manual verification is recommended for sentence and paragraph counts.

Approximate: 250 words/page (double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman, 1" margins — standard academic). 500 words/page (single-spaced). So: 1,000 words ≈ 2 pages (double-spaced) or 1 page (single-spaced). 5,000 words ≈ 10 pages double-spaced. Font choice, margins, and line spacing significantly affect page count.
